LOCATION: Arkady Mordvinov was in charge of the elaboration of the design of the high-rise of the Ukraina Hotel. He was one of the leading Soviet architects of that time, and was also a member of the presidium of the Academy of Construction and Architecture. Once the design was ready, it was approved by the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the 25th of July 1947.
The erection of the 34-storeyed building took place on a picturesque curve of the Moskva river next to the governmental route – the exit from the Kremlin and Kalininsky prospect (now known as Novy Arbat) unto Kutuzovsky prospect. Two 9-storeyed apartment buildings are attached to the hotel. In front of the building there is a park where the monument to Taras Shevchenko, a famous Ukrainian poet, was presented to the public in 1974.
The erection of the future hotel gave the architects and construction workers quite a few new technologies and inventions. New construction materials were used to lessen the weight of the walls: perforated bricks, hollow ceramic blocks. To lift hollow blocks to upper floors the engineers constructed a special crane. Granite was used for the revetment of the socle of the main entrance, the first floors were covered with limestone, and the rest of the floors – with ceramic blocks.
The hotel became the highest hotel in Russia: the height of the hotel is 206 meters including the 73-meter steeple. No wonder the building is considered one of the most beautiful high-rises of Moscow. The light, sky-rocketing lines and radiant colors make the skyscraper “light”. Despite the impressive size, the high-rise, located on a curve of the Moskva river, looks delicate and light.
On the 24th of May of 1957 a solemn opening ceremony was held with the participation of the Minister of Culture Mrs Furtseva, and the Ukraina Hotel received its first guests who the press of that time wrote about in the following way, “ The author of the project imagined the Soviet people: Stakhanovites, Heroes of Socialist Labor. They come to Moscow by thousands on business, and many of them arrive in the capital to receive their honors and awards. They are the masters of new life, creators of communism, and it is for them that the Hotel has been built.” SHOW MAP
ACCOMMODATION: The guests of the Ukraina Hotel always have at their disposal 860 rooms. There are almost 200 single rooms and more than 600 double rooms of different categories – standard, enhanced and business class rooms. Each room features not only comfortable furniture that disposes one to rest, but also a refrigerator, a neat bathroom with a shower, a telephone, a mini-safe and a modern TV with many satellite and cable channels. HOTEL FACILITIES & SERVICES: The guests of the Hotel have at their disposal 1017 comfortable rooms for 1630 persons (15 suites, 68 two rooms apartments, 530 doubles and 404 singles), four spacious halls of the largest in Moscow restaurant "Ukraina" with Russian, Ukrainian and European cuisine; restaurants "Invino" and "Atlantic", bar "Der Arts". The Business Center is opened 24 hours, offering various facilities for businessmen (fax, Internet, international telecommunication, computers, two conference halls on 90 and 180 persons equipped for simultaneous interpreting). MEETINGS & FUNCTIONS: The state-of-the-art business center is open from 8 am to 11 pm. It is located on the second floor of the hotel and is specifically designed for those who are in Moscow on business. It has all the necessary facilities for work: telephone and fax, TV and VCR, computers with access to the Internet, projectors, rooms for negotiations, meetings and seminars. The comfortable radio-equipped conference hall can house up to 70 persons.
Larger events, from press-conferences to big meetings with more than a hundred participants, can be accommodated at one of the halls of the Ukraina Restaurant. The Business Center has to offer a whole range of additional services. The translators will quickly translate, type and copy documents, and connect you by phone or fax with any part of the world. DININGS & BARS: Five restaurants and a round-the-clock lobby bar are available on the lower floors of the Ukraina Hotel. You are sure to find the environment and dishes of your preference in them.
