LOCATION: The Tavern was established in 1946 by Mr. and Mrs. Domingo and Aida Alvarez as a restaurant providing overnight accommodation mostly to American GIs coming from the war.

Growing with Surigao, The Tavern has become both a historical landmark and personal witness to the triumphs and trials of the city and its people.
Situated at the seaside boulevard near the port of Surigao surrounded by various commercial and entertainment centers, and frequented by locals, visiting businessmen, and foreign tourists, the Tavern atmosphere is always a rich milieu of business and pleasure.
With the advent of the new generation, the hotel is poised to take her place as the premier hotel of Surigao-not only its first and favorite, but also becoming its finest hotel.

A tavern is, loosely, a place of business where people gather to drink alcoholic beverages and, more than likely, also be served food, though not licensed to put up guests. The word derives from the Latin taverna whose original meaning was a shed or workshop.

Gathering in a tavern to drink beer or other alcoholic drinks is a longstanding social tradition dating at least to Sumer (3500 BC); in Sumer the tavern keeper was traditionally a woman but in other places and times women could be completely excluded from tavern culture.
They have existed in England from as early as the 13th Century and by that time they were commonly known as pubs.
