Malay  Technology Museum is located next to the Brunei Museum at Kota Batu, 7 km from Bandar Seri Begawan.  The building was donated by the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Campanies, in conjunction with the Brunei Darussalam's independence in 1984.  The Museum was officially opened by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam on 29th February 1988.

The rapid development of modern technology in Brunei Darussalam which penetrates local culture seems to suggest that indigenous technologies such as cottage industries and handicraft are very much on the brink of extinction.  Without proper documentation these indigenous technologies will likely be lost forever.  The Malay Technology Museum is specially established to document/to collect/ and to exhibit these indigenous technologies for the benefit of future generations.

Gallery 1: Water Village Traditional House Gallery

This gallery shows architectural structure of houses in the water village in the late 19th century up to mid 20th century.  Six model houses are shown in detail, backed up by diorama, depicting the panoramic view of the water village.

Gallery 2: Water Village Traditional Technology Gallery

This gallery shows various types of handicrafts and cotage industries found in the water village.  The display includes boat construction, roof-making, gold smithing, silver smithing, brass casting, ironsmithing and cloth weaving.

Examples of handicrafts products are also exhibited in this gallery, plus a diorama depicting the panormic view of Water Village to provide a more realistic look.

Gallery 3: Inland Traditional Technology Gallery

This gallery exhibits the indigenous technologies of the inland people.  It shows models the kedayan, Dusun and Murut houses and a Punan hut.  Techniques of production for sago, brown sugar and handicrafts ae also exhibited.

Temporary Exhibition

Temporary exhibition is organized by departments or individuals at the museum lobby.  The duration of the exhibition is between one to three months.
